The world population is projected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030, and to increase further to 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion by 2100. Africa has the highest rate of population growth among major areas with more than half of the global population growth between now and 2050 expected to occur in Africa. The population of sub-Saharan Africa is projected to double by 2050. Most of Africa’s population growth can be attributed to urban migration which leads to more traffic congestion and challenges for the already burdened roadway systems, the predominant mode of transport on the continent, resulting in more loss of productivity and higher levels of environmental pollution.
